Trenord: Railway Workforce Management with MAIOR
Trenord is the company that manages regional, suburban and airport rail transport in Lombardy, the most mobile region in the country. Every day, Trenord offers a service of more than 2,200 trips used by 750,000 passengers – figures unparalleled in the rest of Italy – thanks to the work of a total of 1,300 train drivers and 1,200 train conductors, who work on duties.
Efficient organization of train crew duties and ease in rescheduling, in case of unforeseen events, are necessary to ensure a daily supply of such a size. These are operations for which Trenord uses technology and looks to continuous innovation for ever greater sustainability.
MAIOR has developed a new management solution for Trenord that meets the need for agility and flexibility.
The starting challenges
In 2017, Trenord and MAIOR embarked on a shared effort to implement a new crew management solution that is innovative and adequate to handle the complexity of daily operations and respond promptly to the needs for subsequent adaptation, which are natural and frequent in a public transport company.
The new management environment created by MAIOR, which integrates information from previous systems, allows Trenord to easily draw crew rosters on the daily service offering and to adequately intervene on any rescheduling that becomes necessary, both in the case of individual runs and in the face of more structural interventions related to lasting changes.
The MAIOR Suite also supports Trenord in the operations of summarization and analysis and in the simplification of some processes.
Benefits of introducing MAIOR Suite.
Today Trenord successfully manages about 1,300 train drivers and 1,200 train conductors, using the MAIOR Suite to plan, manage and monitor crew activities.
Key benefits of implementing this solution include:
- Agility in management: By partnering with MAIOR, Trenord is able to plan duties to ensure the largest regional rail service in Italy. The software’s flexibility enables prompt reaction in managing crew needs .
- Timeliness in the management of unforeseen events and emergencies: In case of unforeseen events regarding individual runs and in emergency situations, Trenord can count on MAIOR Suite to quickly adapt crew duties and reschedule its services.
- Process simplification: The integration of the Crew Portal with the MAIOR Suite has further simplified crew management operations. For example, vacation requests are now handled in an automated manner, eliminating the need to exchange e-mails or manual communications.
“The MAIOR Suite allows us effectiveness and agility in shift management to ensure a regional rail offering every day that is unmatched in Italy. On the one hand it has reduced effort, and on the other it has increased efficiency.”
Visions on the challenges of the future
Trenord is constantly working with an eye to the future, to meet the travel needs in Lombardy today and the transformations of tomorrow.
Crew management will undergo continuous evolution, thanks in part to advanced algorithms being developed.
This will further improve operations and adopt innovative approaches that facilitate the management of unforeseen events in an increasingly rapid manner, minimizing the operational economic impact.
The partnership between Trenord and MAIOR represents a successful example of how technology can improve operational efficiency and service quality in the public rail transportation world.
